My biologist friend says it looks most like the endangered Utah white tail prairie dog (Cynomys leucurus), with the one problem that the tail seems a bit long. It was in Canyonlands N.P.

What is this juvenile mammal?

I found this critter in SE Utah in the sandstone slickrock desert. It looks much like a baby squirrel but is far too big. Scott in Idaho
