Intima

Intima

(Science: pathology) inner layer of blood vessel, comprising an endothelial monolayer on the luminal face with a subcellular elastic extracellular matrix containing a few smooth muscle cells.

Below the intima is the media, then the adventitia. The term may be applied to other organs.
