(Science: anatomy) under the tongue; applied especially, in the higher vertebrates, to the twelfth or last pair of cranial nerves, which are distributed to the base of the tongue.

One of the hypoglossal nerves.

Origin: Pref. Hypo- _ gr. The tongue.
