(Science: pathology) The abnormal multiplication or increase in the number of normal cells in normal arrangement in a tissue.

Compare: hypertrophy.

Origin: gr. Plasis = formation abnormal increase in number of cells.An increase in cell number which results in an increase in tissue mass.

What influences cell size?

i also to agree with sachin_vch --> cells can adapt to its environment with different mechanisms: atrophy, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, dysplasia or metaplasia
