Homo sapiens idaltu



An extinct subspecies of Homo sapiens that lived 160,000 years ago in Ethiopia, Africa. The species show a mix of archaic and modern features based on archaeological records.


The first remains of H.s. idaltu were recovered in Ethiopia in 1997.

Word origin: Latin homo (human being, man) + Saho-Afar idaltu (elder or first born)

Abbreviation: H. s. sapiens
