Definition

noun, plural: homeotic genes

A developmental gene that specifies the anterior-posterior axis, as well as segment identity during the early embryonic development of certain organisms, such as metazoans.


Supplement

The gene is called homeotic because mutation of this gene leads to the formation of a normal structure or organ in place of another at an abnormal site.


Synonym: Hox gene
