what animal could this be?

Could it have been a Marmota caligata (Hoary Marmot)? http://www.tradebit.com/usr/stock-photos/pub/9002/1158852.jpg without a tail? :wink:

what animal could this be?

Nope, sorry. Even hauled out my old field guide to the mammals. The closest I could find would have been a hoary marmot that that got hit in the face with a frying pan and then got its tail caught in the door.
