2. Shaped like a heart; cordate.

this word is chiefly used in composition; as, hard-hearted, faint-hearted, kind-hearted, lion-hearted, stout-hearted, etc. Hence the nouns hard-heartedness, faint-heartedness, etc.

... before the diagnosis is made - as if they had some sort of unspoken recognition. Ironic really, since so often it happens after a lifetime of half-hearted attempts to stop smoking, at a time when it would have done some good!
