(Science: botany) a genus of plants which includes the witch-hazel (hamamelis Virginica), a preparation of which is used medicinally.

Origin: NL, fr. Gr. A kind of medlar or service tree; at the same time _ an apple, any tree fruit.

Flowers in winter

... a work speaking about the plants flowering during winter. For this work, I want to know how is a flower able to flower during winter (for example: Hamamelis, Sarcoccoca, ...). How aren't flower organs destroyed by cold temperatures? Thanks.
