... in males making males choosy, when males would receive a higher fitness gain by mating with as many females as possible? Does it all come down to guarding a higher quality female being more advantageous for a human male, than reproducing with as many females as he possibly can?

Lions x Elephants

... fighting so they do not know how it is done. i'm not saying that male lions can always kill young elephants, because often times the mother is guarding it. but if they get lost or strangle behind, a Male lion might have a shot at it, despite it's size difference. Hope this helps! - Mr B
