Greenhouse effect

Definition

noun

The distinctive heating effect on the Earth's surface due to the gases in the atmosphere that trap solar radiation and emit infrared radiation.


Supplement

Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour, function like a "greenhouse" that traps radiation and consequently warms the (internal surface) temperature.

Greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon but may be augmented when the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere rises, especially due to human activities.
