Great alveolar cells

Cuboidal cells connected with the squamous pulmonary alveolar cells and having in their cytoplasm lamellated bodies (cytosomes) that represent the source of the surfactant that coats the alveoli.

Synonym: granular pneumonocytes, type II cells.
