a bleached cotton cloth of plain weave, used for dressings, bandages, and absorbent sponges; petrolatum gauze is saturated with petrolatum.

... do a dressing on my leg, she wet a 4 by 4, placed it on my leg in ONE spot and removed it, and then tried to continue with placing the petroleum gauzes (I stopped her and asked about irrigation), then wrapping it with cotton gauze..dammmmmm...the discomfort behind that....even vicondin times ...
