a cell capable of dividing to produce gametes, e.g., a spermatocyte or oocyte.

Synonym: gamont.

Origin: Gameto-_ g. Kytos, cell An immature animal or plant cell that develops into a gamete by meiosis.A cell that is about to undergo meiosis and turn into 4 gamete cells.
