Free energy

a thermodynamic term used to describe the energy that may be extracted from a system at constant temperature and pressure. In biological systems the most important relationship is: _G = RTln(keq), where keq is an equilibrium constant. The amount of energy available for reactions to occur.

Re: Why is ATP rather than GTP, CTP or TTP the energy currency?

... wondered for a while what drives protein synthesis forward in terms of energy, and why don't ribosomes also catalyse the reverse reaction of peptide ... forms. Surely the only reason hydrolysis of ATP releases free energy is because the reaction is far from equilibrium (otherwise no ...

Re: Increase in free energy in glycolysis

Increase in free energy just refers to Gibbs free energy. That free energy comes from enthalpy (internal energy) - entropy (chaos). ...

Increase in free energy in glycolysis

... in a general biology textbook. It says that in the first 5 steps the free energy increases with each step. Two of those steps are powered by ATP, but the rest are not. ...

Re: Why is ATP rather than GTP, CTP or TTP the energy currency?

The term`Energy Currency`is not accurate one . Because certain energy reactions ATP is NOT preferred ... important – GTP is preferred for the ` selective evolutionary force` for error free protein synthesis ( almost all of them CTP-GTP-TTP and ATP have same Bond energy . All ...
