The totality of fossilized artifacts and their placement within the earth's rock strata. It provides information about the history of life on earth, for instance what the organisms look like, where and when they live, how they evolved, etc.

Natural selection wrong due to cambrian explosion

Yeah, it is possible for soft creatures to be fossilized, it just doesn't happen as often as hard creatures. It is difficult ... because there just aren't that many. Evolution isn't based on the fossil record only. The Cambrian Explosion is something we don't have all the answers ...
