Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde

(Science: chemical) Commonly used fixative and antibacterial agent. As a fixative it is cheap and tends to cause less denaturation of proteins than does glutaraldehyde, particularly if used in a well buffered solution (buffered formalin, formal saline).

old formaldehyde solutions usually contain cross linking contaminants and it is therefore often preferable to used a formaldehyde generating agent such as paraformaldehyde. Formalin fumes, particularly in conjunction with hydrochloric acid vapour, are potently carcinogenic.

'asian flush syndrom' and methanol intoxication

so with asian flush syndrome they have underactive aldehyde dehydrogenase right? and so methanol is converted to formaldehyde and this is toxic when it builds up... therefore people with asian flush syndrome would be more susceptible than someone who metabolizes the aldehyde form ...

Does my protein bind DNA?

you can also try putting the protein together with dna, and then denaturing with formaldehyde to make them bind irreversibly then wash away excess dna and then remove formaldehyde. If any dna was bound to the protein, it should come off now.

Porblems making DIG probe - please help

... in there, you could use a spectrophotometer to check the concentration. You need to run a special gel for mRNA. It needs to be a denaturing (formaldehyde) gel and it needs to be performed in a gel box that is RNase-free, with RNase-free buffer, etc. Before being loaded onto the gel, your ...

BIG PROBLEM WITH NORTHERN BLOT

Your RNA gel probably contained formaldehyde and you probably denatured your samples (including the ladder) with heat and formaldehyde before loading them onto the gel. DNA weight markers are generally double-stranded, but under these conditions ...
