Fluctuation

1. A motion like that of waves; a moving in this and that direction; as, the fluctuations of the sea.

2. A wavering; unsteadiness; as, fluctuations of opinion; fluctuations of prices.

3. (Science: medicine) The motion or undulation of a fluid collected in a natural or artifical cavity, which is felt when it is subjected to pressure or percussion.

Origin: L. Fluctuatio; cf. F. Fluctuation.

... I don't know whether it was already translated into English. The main idea of the book as follows: Order is created by order factor, not by fluctuation; Entropy is a wrong theory. Orderness has nothing to do with entropy.

Help with definition of Environmental Gradient.

A "gradient" suggests a change or fluctuation in something so an environmental gradient would mean the changes in the conditions within an environment...these are things like the climate differences between biomes and such.
