HalophilesIn case the wiki didn't ezplain: Halophiles have an osmotic gradient that allows them to survive, even flourish, in hypertonic environments. If you were to put them into fresh or distilled water, the change in osmotic balance would kill them - even cause them to burst.

Where are we heading to ?... the nature versus nurture argument, but we'd be here forever.) Playing Devil's advocate for a moment, we may well be allowing genetic diversity to flourish or preserving useful traits that would otherwise be lost, which could prove useful in the case of some cataclysmic event.
