Dictionary » F » Flagellum FlagellumDefinition noun, plural: flagella (biology) Long, slender, threadlike, whiplike extension of certain cells or unicellular organisms used mainly for movements (others for signal transduction). (entomolgy) A clavola, the whiplike portion above the basal joints in an insect antenna.
In bacteria, the flagella are helical filaments made up of the protein, flagellin, and rotate like screws. In eukaryotes, such as in cells of animals, plants and protists, they are made up of microtubules surrounded by the plasma membrane and enable the cells to move in a whip-like fashion. Some flagella are not used for movement but in sensation and signal transduction by various cell types, e.g. rod photoreceptor cells of the eye, olfactory receptor neurons of the nose, kinocilium in cochlea of the ear.
Related forms: flagellar (adjective).

Results from our forumRe: Flagellum Motor:Is this Scientific?Yes, biohazard. I agree with you. it's like looking at the weather in 2D when it is a 3D system. But the point I see here, that you may not agree with, is that NS is not directional, but evolution is supposed to be. To say that NS is directional is to say that the proper sequence of environments jus...

Re: Flagellum Motor:Is this Scientific? This would tend to neutralize NS in theory--a trade off good in one environment and bad in another. So what happens when the environment changes or they move to a different environment? This is exactly what natural selection is all about. An organism cannot have all the possible traits and characte...

Re: Flagellum Motor:Is this Scientific? biohazard wrote Here's an example of evolution being observed: http://myxo.css.msu.edu/ecoli/ (Richard Lenski's project on E. coli evolution) My first question is what kind of trade offs did this alleged evolution incur which is apparent in research such as this? Kind of like --did you know the fas...

Re: Flagellum Motor:Is this Scientific? They say theres more than one way to skin a cat, when it comes to basic principles of movement there isn't such great diversity. Everything that moves follows the same similar function and movements to achieve its movement in the matter around it. These are based on Newtons laws of motion. Its not l...

Re: Bird-Dinosaur News... some time ago. Alex I gave you my email, and said it was fine. Drop me a line at gadabout44@yahoo.com. By the way, I read Ken Miller's "The Flagellum Unspun," online. I watched some of his mousetrap rebuttals. Read Michael Behe's rebuttal to rebuttals. Have thoughts but no time right ...
