Eye-closure pupil reaction

a constriction of both pupils when an effort is made to close eyelids forcibly held apart. A variant of the pupil response to near vision.

Synonym: galassis pupillary phenomenon, giffords reflex, lid-closure reaction, orbicularis phenomenon, orbicularis pupillary reflex, Piltz sign, Westphal's pupillary reflex, Westphal-Piltz phenomenon.

The fight or flight reaction is insigated by adrenaline which activates the sympathetic branch of the ans. This enables us to better respond to stressors eg increased heart rate, pupil diltation, increased blood to muscles etc
