(general) The evening, especially before a certain event or holiday.

(genetics) Symbol for even-skipped, one of the primary pair-rule genes involved in setting the segmentation pattern, such as in fruit fly embryo.


Supplement

In genetics, eve functions in the regulation of the segment patterning in a fruit fly embryo. Mutation in this gene affects the even-numbered parasegments in the body pattern of the Drosophila larva.


Word origin: Middle English, variant of even.
