Curing

Curing

1.Removing all traces of a disease from the body so that the body is perfectly healthy again.

2. A process of improving the flavour, colour, tenderness, and shelf life of a meat, such as by using smoke, spices, and chemicals.

3. Making a finished product out of a raw material by using heat or chemicals, such as tanned leather or vulcanised rubber.

4. Causing the loss of a plasmid from a bacterial culture or the loss of a dormant virus which has inserted itself into the bacterial genome (a lysogenised virus).

I suppose I wouldn't be against curing any diseases, but gene therapy for purely cosmetic purposes seems a bit over the line, in my opinion. Although I am reminded of a form of genetic modification described in David Weber's Honor Harrington ...

... before the antibiotics, and it even had some limited success (although the toxic effects of mercury itself sometimes were worse than it's curing effect).

I have heard of procedure involving breaking the bones of the legs and then stretching the legs during the curing process so that they would grow longer. The (non scientific)paper describing the procedure said it was efficient but slow and extremely painful. And it was used ...

... proliferation of cells... certainly not all cancers proliferate exponentially... as for treatment the only cancers we have a good hope of 'curing' with chemotherapy and radiotherapy alone is testicular cancer and leukaemia... but i think it's still pretty true that surgery is the only way ...
