... what we know about you dataset (not much) I guess that the only z dimension that you have is the number of samples for each particular (X,Y) coordinates, but that will make sense only if there are more than one of each pair.

Rise/run is the same thing as slope of a line. You need two x values and two y values. Such as (2,1)(4,2) These are xy coordinates. Rate of change is DeltaY/Delta X or in our example above 1-2/2-4 = -1/2 This number is only meaningful if your graph is linear. In your case above it ...
