Congenital

(Science: embryology) Existing at and usually before, birth, referring to conditions that are present at birth, regardless of their causation.

Origin: L. Congenitus = born together present at birth but not necessarily hereditary; acquired during fetal development.Reference to occurrences that happen before birth, and are caused by the environment, i.e. they are not inherited.

two different color eyes

My brother has partial heterochromia iridis. His eyes are primarily brown with one eye quarter blue. We learned it could be associated with congenital syndromes (Hirschprungs/ Waardenburg), whch he does not have. They are very interesting to look at though and haven't come across anyone else ...

Teratogens and congenital defects

can UV light be a cause of congenital developmental defects? I think not since the UV light can't reach the fetus or the gametes of the mother.

Selective Breeding

... has other effects. Like various ailments that certain dog breeds have, or what happens to a dairy cow if it isn't milked. Is it ethical to create congenital problems just to get a feature you want?
