A substance that enhances the effects mediated by acetylcholine in the peripheral nervous system, or that is capable of producing, altering, or releasing acetylcholine, especially from parasympathetic nerve endings.

Supplement

This agent or drug acts directly, i.e. by stimulating the acetylcholine receptors such as nicotinic or muscarinic receptors, and indirectly, i.e. by inhibiting cholinesterase, promoting the release of acetylcholine.
