Chemotherapeutic agent

noun, plural: chemotherapeutic agents

A chemical agent used for treating various forms of cancer generally by directly killing the cancer cells.

Chemotherapeutic agents also affect the normal cells such as the bone marrow. Since the bone marrow is suppressed to some degree the number of white blood cells is reduced. This immunosuppression leads to increased risk of infection.
