Characteristic radiation

monochromatic radiation produced when an electron is ejected from an atom, creating a vacancy in an electron shell, and the vacancy is filled by an electron from another shell. The energy of the photon produced is the difference between the binding energies of the two shell positions.

Synonym: characteristic emission.
