An ionophore forming a channel from where ions can pass through a hydrophobic medium, such as the interior of the lipid bilayer of cell membrane

Channel formers have a hydrophobic exterior that comes in contact with the hydrophobic interior of the lipid bilayer of cell membrane and a hydrophilic interior to allow facilitated diffusion of ions across the cell membrane.
