Burr cell


noun, plural: burr cells

An elongated or oval-shaped red blood cell with multiple, short, blunt projections evenly distributed on the cell surface, usually indicative of chronic renal disease or failure.


Burr cells are at times being referred to as echinocytes for their multiple, uniform spines on their surface.
