(Science: disease) An endemic form of polyneuritis (nerve inflammation), due to an unbalanced diet, with a deficiency of vitamin B1(thiamin).

Common in those who chronically abuse alcohol. Avitaminosis caused by lack of thiamine (vitamin B1).

... urge to drink as much as possible. I suspect that without actually experiencing it, it's simply impossible to understand what that's like. As for beriberi, I don't really know how common it is. In the U.S., it's found almost exlusively in alcoholics. Getting it would largely depend on the diet ...
