Beetle

Any insect of the order coleoptera, having four wings, the outer pair being stiff cases for covering the others when they are folded up. See coleoptera.

(Science: zoology) beetle mite, one of many species of mites, of the family Oribatidae, parasitic on beetles. Black beetle, the common large black cockroach (blatta orientalis).

Origin: oe. Bityl, bittle, as. Btel, fr. Btan to bite. See bite.

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think there is a shieldbug with a smooth shiny domed black body. It looked most like a tiny timarcha but with this single proboscis instead of antennae. I would guess it was a Hemiptera and not a beetle. Perhaps a negro bug?

Beetle identification

Can you help me identify this beetle? I found it floating in our pool. it appears to have a proboscis and I thought I saw a thin white band along the edge of the front of its shell. thanks in advance for your help! :D
