Beauxite

Beauxite

(Science: chemical) a ferruginous hydrate of alumina. It is largely used in the preparation of aluminium and alumina, and for the lining of furnaces which are exposed to intense heat.

Origin: f, fr. Baux or Beaux, near Arles.
