The surgical removal of the talus bone (astragalus).


Supplement

Astragalectomy is done usually for the stabilization of the ankle. It is performed on patients with deformed calcaneus, foot paralysis (caused by poliomyelitis) and clubfoot deformities.


Word origin: Greek astragalus + ektome, excision
