Re: The difference between microbiology and molecular biology

Micro-micron size scale so bacteria and cells of that size Molecular-molecular scale, we're talking pretty much nanometers and angstroms. DNA, RNA, Ion channels.

what is the phase problem? x ray crystallography

... of a problem for proteins as there aren’t so many ways to derive the phases, and the resolution of the data usually aren’t as good—typically 2-3 angstroms resolution for proteins compared to 0.7-1 angstroms for a routine small molecule crystal structure. Nowdays, most small molecules can be solved ...

What is the size of an antibody

The crystal structures of antibodies are known. I haven't looked it/them up, but they have to be in the range of 40-50 angstroms in the shortest dimension to something like 150-200 angstroms in the largest--so say a "box of 50 x 50 x 200 angstroms might be a reasonable guess ...

confusion in calculating...

DNA in mitochondria is circular, not linear like in the nucleus in mammals it's a little over 16.000 bases. at an average of 3.4 angstroms per 10 bases... do the math ;) but it ain't possible to determine, cause one mitochondrion doesn't have one copy of the dna molecule, but multiple ...
