Anchorage independence

A condition in which a cell maintains its capacity to spread, divide and function despite of the absence of a stable or inert surface to anchor with.

Anchorage independence in a previously anchorage-dependent cell indicates cell transformation. The loss of anchorage dependence is exhibited by cells that have become malignant.
