(Science: anatomy) The hollow, cuplike portion of the pelvis into which the head of the thigh bone (femur) fits.

(Science: zoology) also, in entomology, the leg socket on an insects abdomen or thorax. The cup-shaped hollow in the hipbone into which the head of the femur fits to form a ball-and-socket joint.A socket found in the femur of mammals that assists in joint movement.
