Evolution and hatchery populations... I think that maybe you're assuming that a behaviorally uniform population (3-year breeders) is genetically uniform, but there will be some "abnormal" 2-year breeders in there to start, but of THEIR offspring, tending toward 2-year, more won't be picked up later than the 3-year-leanings' ...
