A type of plant hormone found in the endosperm of maize fruits for the first time. With isopentenyladenine the most abundant cytokinin present in plants.

Isoprenoid cytokinin with hydroxyl group on the side chain. It can exist in two isomers, trans or cis; trans being the major cytokinin type in many plant species with high cytokinin activity, whereas cis-zeatin was for long though to be only minor component with low or no activity at all.
