wombat

(Science: zoology) Any one of three species of Australian burrowing marsupials of the genus Phascolomys, especially the common species (P. Ursinus). They are nocturnal in their habits, and feed mostly on roots.

Origin: From the native name, womback, wombach, in Australia.
