sepal

(Science: botany) A member of the (usually green) outer whorl of non-fertile parts surrounding the fertile organs of a flower. One of the green parts that form the calyx of a flower.A specialised structure that appears in plants, usually to protecting a new growing shoot, though its function can vary from species to species.
