Of, or pertaining to, or characteristic of a prokaryote, which is basically an organism lacking a true nucleus.


Organisms may be grouped in two major groups: prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Prokaryotes include the eubacteria and archaea.

Word origin: prokaryote + -ic.

Variant: prokaryotic (British).
