The splitting or decomposition of a chemical compound by means of light energy or photons.


Supplement

For example, the photolysis of water molecule in photosynthesis occurred under the influence of light. When photons are absorbed, it causes the hydrogen to bind to an acceptor, subsequently releasing the oxygen.
