An abnormally low concentration of circulating neutrophils in the blood.


For instance, an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of <500 per microlitre is considered (severe type) neutropenia. Individuals with neutropenia are more susceptible to bacterial infections.

Word origin: Latin prefix neutro- + Greek penía (deficiency).
