Iliotibial tract

a fibrous reinforcement of the fascia lata on the lateral surface of the thigh, extending from the crest of the ilium to the lateral condyle of the tibia.

Synonym: tractus iliotibialis, iliotibial band, maissiats band.\

the tract at its upper end splits into 2 is attached to the tubercle of the illiac crest and the other to the capsule of the hip joint.

it provides attatchment to two important muscles......tensor fascia lata and some fibres of gluteus maximus.

appplied:stabilises both the knee joint and the hip joint.during extension and partial flexion, the tract stabilises the knee joint against gravity.
