noun, plural: glycans

A polysaccharide or oligosaccharide, especially one that is attached to a glucoconjugate, as glycoprotein, glycolipid, and proteoglycan.


Cellulose and chitin are examples of a glycan. Glycans may be homopolymer or heteropolymer depending on their monosaccharide residue components. Glycans may also be linear or branched.
