noun, plural: endonucleases

A nuclease that cleaves the phosphodiester bond between nucleotides situated within the polynucleotide chain, hence, producing fragments of various sizes.


A common example of endonuclease is restriction endonuclease.

Word origin: Greek éndon (within) + nuclease.
