A phylum of the animal Kingdom comprising all the animals that have, at some stage in their life, a notochord (a hollow dorsal nerve cord), pharyngeal slits and a muscular tail extending past the anus.

Includes the subphyla cephalochordata, urochordata, and vertebrata (vertebrates).
