Norovirus uses a protein to infect cells

Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine have discovered a host protein that norovirus uses to infect cells. The research, reported in the journal Science, sheds light on how norovirus enters host cells and opens an avenue to study the virus. Scientists looked at a species of norovirus that infects mice, known as murine NoV (MNoV) in order to investigate why human norovirus infects only humans and mouse norovirus infects only mice.

Using CRISPR-Cas9 technique, they found that knockdown of the CD300lf gene in mouse cells made MNoV unable to infect the cells. CD300lf makes a protein on mouse cell surface. The team also found that this protein is essential for MNoV binding and replication.

The Glycoprotein will only attach to a receptor of a certain structure allowing the virus to enter the cell and deliver its payload. In the mouse version the Glycoprotein has a structure is such a way to infect mouse cells and only mouse cells with this receptor as for the human version it has the Glycoprotein to infect the human and only humans due to a slight difference in this receptor between mice and humans, unlike rabies which can infect any mammals due to the fact that rabies Glycoprotein can attach to the receptor that is common between all mammals.
