Aquatic life in the polar regions

Post by josem » Sun Aug 24, 2014 8:29 pm

During winter in polar regions there is a thick sheet of ice above the water bodies. How the water below ice get oxygenated to sustain aquatic life.

Would sunlight penetrate through the thick layer of ice for the growth of algae?
